U.K. WEEKEND BOXOFFICE & 7/30 PREVIEW

TOY STORY was dominant, with an outstanding “official” opening total of £21.2m (combining 3D, 2D, and IMAX) since last Monday’s release – effectively a 7 day weekend. Even the 3 day total of close to £11.5m, is almost 3x any other movie in the market, so any way you look at it, it is an exceptional result. Notably perhaps, in light of recent debate about the power of 3D worldwide, the 3D version delivered well over 3x the gross of the 2D version, from marginally less prints. INCEPTION took second place, adding close to £4.2m on its second weekend, down 29% on opening weekend. ECLIPSE came in 3rd with £1.43m – it looks to be tailing off quickly, down a further 58% in its 3rd weekend (although with the huge preview weekend, this is effectively its 4th week). SHREK took a heavy hit from the arrival of TOY STORY, especially in the loss of 3D screens: business was down some 70% overall at £1.22m, with the 3D gross falling 81%, and 2D down 39%, from last week. The week’s other openers proved as weak as anticipated, with REBOUND delivering just over £350k, and SPLICE £110k. The other notable result was previews of KARATE KID grossing £880k over two full days – slightly below par perhaps, but not surprising given the competition it faced. Both this week’s openers, A TEAM and the wide release of KARATE KID, start on Wednesday, making this another hugely competitive 7 days.
