Cats And Dogs: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore 3D

The family friendly and general audience sequel should perform similar to the original though 3D runs could boost grosses into the 70+M area. Exhibitors gave the film positive reviews and this weekend could see another family film score well at the summer boxoffice. ...Read More

Dinner For Schmucks

Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd are the main draws to this wacked out comedy that strains the plausibility of the screenplay. Nevertheless, the film should deliver a 15-20M opening weekend, but tail off quickly settling for a 40-50M total. ...Read More

NETFLIX BECOMING MAJOR STUDIO INCOME SOURCE

Netflix probably wont get a star on Hollywoods Walk of Fame anytime soon, but the Webs top video-rental service has recently become a blockbuster hit with film-industry chieftains. Just nine months ago, sources in the film industry told CNET that Netflixs long string of Wall Street-wowing earnings reports hadnt gone unnoticed at the studios. With all that money rolling in, many studio decision makers werent happy with their cut--especially when it came to the companys blossoming streaming-movie service. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has apparently solved the problem, at least for now--by writing checks. In the quarter that ended June 30, 2009, Netflix spent $9 million on acquiring films and television shows for its streaming service. Last week, Netflix reported that for the same period this year, it spent $66 million--more than seven times as much. That wasnt a fluke. For the first six months of 2010, Netflix has paid the studios $116 million for streaming content, compared with $31 million for the same period last year. Some analysts expect those payments to keep going up as the company continues to fill out its film library. Netflixs ability and willingness to shell out big bucks for higher and higher grades of movies and TV shows was clearly illustrated earlier this month when the company announced it had struck a $100 million deal with film financier Relativity Media to acquire about a dozen movies per year starting in 2011. As part of the agreement, Netflix will offer the upcoming film, "The Fighter," starring Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, and Christian Bale.

NETFLIX 2ND QUARTER FINANCIAL RESULTS

Netflix ended the second quarter of 2010 with approximately 15,001,000 total subscribers, representing 42 percent year-over-year growth from 10,599,000 total subscribers at the end of the second quarter of 2009 and 7 percent sequential growth from 13,967,000 subscribers at the end of the first quarter of 2010. Net subscriber change in the quarter was an increase of 1,034,000 compared to an increase of 289,000 for the same period of 2009 and an increase of 1,699,000 for the first quarter of 2010. Gross subscriber additions for the quarter totaled 3,059,000, representing 58 percent year-over-year growth from 1,936,000 gross subscriber additions in the second quarter of 2009 and 12 percent quarter-over-quarter decline from 3,492,000 gross subscriber additions in the first quarter of 2010. Of the 15,001,000 total subscribers at quarter end, 97 percent, or 14,577,000, were paid subscribers. The other 3 percent, or 424,000, were free subscribers. Paid subscribers represented 98 percent of total subscribers at the end of the second quarter of 2009 and at the end of the first quarter of 2010.

U.K. WEEKEND BOXOFFICE & 7/30 PREVIEW

TOY STORY was dominant, with an outstanding “official” opening total of £21.2m (combining 3D, 2D, and IMAX) since last Monday’s release – effectively a 7 day weekend. Even the 3 day total of close to £11.5m, is almost 3x any other movie in the market, so any way you look at it, it is an exceptional result. Notably perhaps, in light of recent debate about the power of 3D worldwide, the 3D version delivered well over 3x the gross of the 2D version, from marginally less prints. INCEPTION took second place, adding close to £4.2m on its second weekend, down 29% on opening weekend. ECLIPSE came in 3rd with £1.43m – it looks to be tailing off quickly, down a further 58% in its 3rd weekend (although with the huge preview weekend, this is effectively its 4th week). SHREK took a heavy hit from the arrival of TOY STORY, especially in the loss of 3D screens: business was down some 70% overall at £1.22m, with the 3D gross falling 81%, and 2D down 39%, from last week. The week’s other openers proved as weak as anticipated, with REBOUND delivering just over £350k, and SPLICE £110k. The other notable result was previews of KARATE KID grossing £880k over two full days – slightly below par perhaps, but not surprising given the competition it faced. Both this week’s openers, A TEAM and the wide release of KARATE KID, start on Wednesday, making this another hugely competitive 7 days.

VOD NEWS

We believe plans to test a shortened release window through VOD via cable operators have been halted on concerns that retail giant Wal-Mart may object given possible negative ramifications on DVD sales. We believe this obstacle has removed a major overhang that has been weighing on the theater stocks since the national cable show in May.
